playerbio

Born in Woodland, CA, Max Robert Stassi is a professional baseball catcher for the Chicago White Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). The Oakland Athletics drafted him in the fourth round of the 2009 Major League Baseball draft. In 2013, Max made his MLB debut with the Houston Astros. He also played for the Los Angeles Angels.

After playing for the Astros each season from 2013 to 2017, but never getting into more than 14 games in any of these, he finally won a permanent job as the team's main back-up catcher in 2018. He had an excellent year in the shortened 2020 season, hitting .278 with 7 homers and 20 RBI in 31 games.

On June 14, 2021, Stassi earned the American League Player of the Week Award after starting five of the Angels’ six games behind the plate hitting .455 (10-for-22) with three homers, three doubles, eight RBIs and a 1.478 OPS.

In 2021, Max hit 13 homers in 87 games, and he agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Angels on March 24, 2022.  On December 8, 2023, Max was traded by the Los Angeles Angels to the Braves. The very next day, the White Sox acquired Max and cash considerations from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for a player to be named later.

Stassi's father, grandfather, and great-grandfather played as catchers in minor league baseball. His father, Jim, coached him at Yuba City. Max's great uncle, Myril Hoag, played in three World Series, batting .320 in them. Max is on Twitter @MaxStassi10.

His brother, Brock, also played major league baseball.
