playerbio

Alfred "Al" Porto (b. June 27, 1926 in Heilwood, Pennsylvania – d. July 6, 2005 in Lancaster, CA), nicknamed "Lefty", was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played in 1948 with the Philadelphia Phillies. All together, Al spent seven seasons in professional baseball from 1946 to 1954. Al was out of baseball in the 1952 and '53 seasons.

He spent a small part of one season in the major leagues, with the 1948 Philadelphia Phillies. He made his MLB debut on April 22, 1948 and pitched four flawless innings for the Phillies at age 21, giving up no runs in three games while pitching four innings with 0.00 ERA. In spite of that, he didn't stick on a team which posted an ERA of 4.08 that year under three managers. His final outing in the big leagues came on May 2, 1948.

He had gone 15-8 with a 3.24 ERA for the Terre Haute Phillies of the class B Three-I League in 1947, and was with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the Triple A International League in 1948, after his try in the big leagues, finishing out the year at 8-5 in 31 games.

Porto's last try at the game came in 1954 with the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League where he appeared in three games with no decisions and called it a career. Al finished up his minor league time with a 45-49 record and a 4.16 ERA while appearing in 202 games. He was 28 years of age.

After baseball, Porto stayed in California, where he worked and lived, until his death on July 6, 2005 in Lancaster, CA, at the age of 79.
