playerbio

Douglas Anthony Mirabelli (born October 18, 1970 in Kingman, AZ) is a former Major League Baseball catcher. He played for the San Francisco Giants (1996–2000), Texas Rangers (2001), Boston Red Sox (2001–2005), and San Diego Padres (2006) before returning to the Red Sox (2006–2007) to end his eleven-year career. He batted and threw right-handed.

While with the Red Sox, Mirabelli was well known as the personal catcher for knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. After leaving the Red Sox, he was reacquired 12 hours before Wakefield was scheduled to pitch against the Yankees. His flight landed 12 minutes before game time at Logan airport, and he was given a police escort right to Fenway to start - he changed into his uniform in the cruiser.

He was part of the Red Sox' World Series championship teams in 2004 and 2007 (though he did not play in the 2007 series). A fan favorite, the Boston Baseball Band have even composed a song about him.
