playerbio

Matthew Bruce Mantei (born July 7, 1973 in Tampa, FL) is a former Major League Baseball relief pitcher. In his injury-riddled 10 year career, Matt played for the Florida Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks and Boston Red Sox.

Mantei had four pitches. He had two fastballs, one of which regularly hit 95 MPH and occasionally hit 100, a sharp curve and an occasional slider. He was also known to throw a knuckleball earlier in his career. Two issues concerning his play were his control, and his ability for his arm to stay healthy. He was consistently injured throughout his career, but very effective when healthy early in his career including receiving MVP votes in 1999 when he saved 32 games. He won a World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001, though he did not play in the series.

On March 4, 2014, Matt and his family appeared on the History Channel program 'Counting Cars', commissioning a custom-restored 1953 Chevy truck. Unfortunately, Matt also made the news in 2018 for being arrested and convicted in a domestic violence case.
