playerbio

Stephen Joseph Grilli (born May 2, 1949 in Brooklyn, NY) is a former professional baseball pitcher who played for the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays. Grilli played for six seasons in baseball, but only played in the major league for parts of four seasons. He made his major league debut at the age of twenty-six on September 19, 1975.

Steve Grilli was the losing pitcher in the longest game in baseball history in 1981 between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings of the International League at Pawtucket's McCoy Stadium and lasted 33 innings. When it resumed on June 23, 1981 he was hung with the loss; he was the fifth of six pitchers for the Rochester Red Wings.

Grilli retired from pro ball after the 1981 season at the age of thirty-two, with a 4-3 win-loss record in seventy appearances over four seasons in the majors.

He was inducted into the Syracuse Sports Wall of Fame in 2006. He has worked as a radio and television announcer for Syracuse Chiefs games. While pitching for the Chiefs in 1979, Grilli became a fan favorite at MacArthur Stadium with his "air banjo" routines done to a Doobie Brothers tune during the seventh-inning stretch. He was also the relief ace on a team that extended the Columbus Clippers to a seventh game in the Governors' Cup finals before losing in extra innings. He is the only major league player ever to come out of Gannon University.

His son Jason was a pitcher for ten different major league clubs.
